Communities in Health Program

CCHERS' Communities in Health Program was founded to help develop "academic community health centers," part of a new model for educating the health professionals of the future. In this new model, health profession students gain exposure to the specific demands of providing primary health care to the city's multi-cultural and multi-lingual communities.

Since its inception, more than 1200 medical and nursing students, medical residents, advanced practice nurses and other health professionals have participated in the program. The curriculum emphasizes core competencies in community assessment, cultural competence and community health and services.

A network of 15 academic community health centers and the faculty of partnering academic institutions and hospitals support the Communities in Health Program, including Northeastern University's Bouve College of Health Sciences, Boston University School of Medicine, and Boston Medical Center. Nursing and medical students in the program learn while helping to provide care in community health centers and services such as health education in public schools, daycare centers and adolescent programs. Participants are also involved in home and nursing visits.
