Summer 2007
“I loved the whole program because it brought out an opportunity of letting one’s voice be heard so we can cry out to the community about the issues that go on nowadays. I will be able to help others learn more about spreading their community voices just like I’m spreading mine.”
-Alexandrea Puckerine, 15, Mattapan
CCHERS’s first “Community Voices Summer Employment Program” began in July 2007. Seven students were selected to participate, and worked for seven weeks in the summer, focusing on the topics of Diabetes, teen pregnancy and maternal health, HIV/AIDS and sexual health, and how these relate to issues of racism and health disparities. Students worked at three community health centers—Dimock, Roxbury Comprehensive, Whittier Street—and were taught by expert lecturers on health, research, photography, and writing.
